Abstract
121,048. Wigelius, S. G., and Uhr, N. W. March 6, 1918. Valve-gear.-Hydraulically-operated internalcombustion engine valves are locked in their limit positions by trapped liquid, the action being controlled by auxiliary slide valves operated by the main liquid pressure. The main valve d is secured to a sleeve f controlled by a spring p in the valve casing c. Within the sleeve f is a slide valve o pressed against a stop-ring 12 by a spring l surrounding a stop-pin k. In the position shown, liquid is trapped in a chamber u by a ring v on the sleeve f engaging the reduced end 7 of the chamber u, and by the end n of the valve o covering holes 9 in the sleeve f. To open the main valve, liquid under pressure is introduced to the chamber a and presses down the valve o slightly so as to release the trapped liquid through the holes 9 and to trap liquid in chambers 18, 20 in the parts f, o respectively, which parts are thus locked together and move downwards until the increasing resistance of the spring p permits the valve o to overrun the sleeve f slightly and bring the body of the valve into engagement with the ring v, which by this time has reached the other reduced end 24 of the casing u. The relative motion of the valve o is limited by the stop-pin k. Liquid is thus once more trapped in the chamber u, and the valve d is locked in its open position. For return of the valve d, pressure in the chamber a is reduced, and the valve o rises slightly and releases the liquid in the chamber u, liquid being trapped in the chambers 17, 19 in the sleeve f and valve o to secure simultaneous rise of the two valves, the valve o again overrunning the sleeve f to lock the valve d in the position shown.
