Abstract

1,210,330. Cooling towers. IDEAL STANDARD G.m.b.H. 24 Dec., 1968 [27 Dec., 1967], No. 61502/68. Heading F4K. [Also in Division B1] A cross-flow cooling tower includes a plurality of upright plates 5 having spaced transverse needle-like projections 6 arranged in spaced vertical rows with small peg-shaped prominences 7 situated between the projections 6 in the direction of gas flow. The plates 5 are disposed in pairs with the projections of one plate projecting towards the other plate of the pair but in staggered relationship thereto, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4. Additional smaller transverse needle-shaped projections 6<SP>1</SP> are arranged immediately before the needle projections 6 of the first vertical row and immediately after the needle projections 6 of the last vertical row on each plate 5. Water to be cooled flows downwardly between adjacent plates in streams 8 over the inner surfaces of the plates and centrally between the plates (see Fig. 3). The plates 5 together with the projections and prominences are preferably formed from plastics materials by hot-moulding. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,140,882.
