Abstract

The cooling tower is a vertical Venturi type structure with natural or forced draught air flow entering horizontally round the base and then continuing vertically up. Condenser tubes are arranged around the base so that the air flows past them and cools and condenses the steam. The tubes are arranged in rows parallel to the direction of the air flow so that continuous straight gaps are left between them for the air to flow through. This reduces friction on the air side, improves air flow and enables the cooling tower to be smaller. It also makes visual inspection of the tubes by maintenance staff easier. The air spaces are approximately the same width as the tube rows.
