Abstract

1,209,996. Wettable powders. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 14 April, 1969 [16 May, 1968], No. 23336/68. Heading A5E. A wettable powder composition comprises a water-insoluble liquid pesticidle, a highlyabsorbent filler having an oil absorption value of at least 100, a water-soluble polymer, a dispersing agent and a wetting agent. The pesticide may be a herbicide, fungicide or preferably an insecticide such as an organophosphorus insecticide, e.g. parathion, methylparathion, malathion or fenitrothion; the filler may be silica; the water-soluble polymer may be polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, vinyl alcohol-vinyl pyrrolidone copolymer, hydroxy ethyl cellulose, sodium salt of polyacrylic or polymethacrylic acid, polyvinyl pyridine hydrochloride, polyvinyl methyl ether or acrylic acidstyrene copolymer; the dispersing agent may be a purified lignosulphonate or an aryl sulphonic acid/formaldehyde condensate; and the wetting agent may be anionic, e.g. sodium alkyl-benzene sulphonate, cationic, e.g. cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride or non-ionic, e.g. a condensate of ethylene or propylene oxide with an alkylphenol or long chain alcohol or amine. The composition may contain a second filler such as kaolinite, china clay, bentonite, talc, Hewitt's earth or Fullers earth. The composition may contain from 15 to 40% of pesticide; from 5 to 10% of water-soluble polymer; 3 to 7% of dispersing agent; and 1 to 4% of wetting agent by weight of the composition, the amount of absorbent filler being the same or greater than the proportion of pesticide present. The composition may be prepared by initially mixing the filler, polymer, dispersing and wetting agents, thereafter adding the pesticide and dry-grinding the composition to give particles.
