Abstract

1,209,960. Preparation of xylose. K. SUMINOE and K. OKAMURA. 23 Feb., 1968, No. 9023/68. Heading C2C. Xylose is manufactured from cottonseed hulls by a method comprising boiling the hulls with 0À1 to 1À0% alkali solution, under a pressure of between normal and 1 kg/cm.2, separating the hulls and the solution, washing the hulls with water, saccharifying the washed hulls, removing a major part but not all of the acetic acid so formed, by blowing steam through the solution, neutralizing the saccharified solution with a calcium-containing compound, removing the precipitate of insoluble calcium salts so formed, adding oxalic acid to the solution to remove the remaining soluble calcium salts, removing the precipitate of calcium oxalate so formed and purifying the filtrate with active carbon and ion exchange resins.
