Abstract

1,133,247. Preparation of #-lactones. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 4 July, 1967 [15 Sept., 1966], No. 41212/66. Heading C2C. A process for the preparation of a #-lactone by cyclization of a #-chlorocarboxylic acid comprises contacting a solution of the acid with a basic anion exchange resin followed by contacting the acid-loaded ion-exchange resin under substantially anhydrous conditions at a temperature between 40‹ and 100‹ C. with an inert solvent and recovering the lactone from the solvent. In a modification, dialysis through an anion-exchange membrane separating a substantially anhydrous solution of the #- chlorocarboxylic acid and an aqueous alkaline solution is employed. Examples prepare α,α- dimethylpropiolactone (pivalolactone). Specified starting materials also include α-trichloromethyl - # - chloropropionic acid and α-methyl- α-cyanomethyl-#-chloropropionic acid.
