Block, rubber, and like apparatus. - In apparatus for lapping gauge blocks &c., the gauge blocks 27 are inserted in slots arranged in a circle near the periphery of a carrier disk 25, which receives a planetary motion between opposed lapping or abrading rings 4, 9. The disk is mounted on a spindle 20 driven by a pulley 22 and mounted eccentrically in a sleeve 16, to which rotary motion is imparted by worm gear 17, 18. Preferably, the spindle is driven at a higher speed than the sleeve. The ring 4 is formed with three lugs 6, in each of which is clamped a post 7; the ring 9 ia formed with corresponding lugs taking over the posts and screwed to receive screwed sleeves 12, in the ends of which are threaded screws 13. The upper ring is first placed in contact with the lower ring and the screws adjusted to abut on the ends of the posts. The ring is then removed, the carrier disk and the work placed in position, and the ring replaced with standard gauge blocks 15 inserted through slots in the sleeves 12 and nesting on the tops of the posts. The grinding then proceeds until the screws make contact with the standard gauges and the descent of the ring is arrested. In a modification, the sleeve 16 is mounted eccentrically in another rotating sleeve, and the spindle is driven through a universal joint.
