Abstract

1,209,748. Laminated roofing material. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. 1 March, 1968 [6 March, 1967], No. 10467/67. Heading B5N. A weather-resistant roofing material comprises a first layer of a synthetic rubber compound whose constituents include chlorosulphonated polyethylene bonded to a second layer of substantially non-resilient flexible metal having a plurality of closely spaced apertures therein, e.g. a metal wire mesh. The first layer, which may have a surface area greater than that of the second layer, may project thereinto to an extent greater than half the thickness thereof. In a preferred embodiment the second layer may be sandwiched between two first layers. The material may be made by masticating solid chlorosulphonated polyethylene with a tensile strength increasing agent, e.g. carbon black or titanium dioxide, an anti-blocking agent, e.g. butylated hydroxy toluol and optionally an activator, the temperature attained during mastication being sufficient to form the synthetic rubber compound, milling the resultant compound, feeding and heating the compound between a first set of pressure rollers to form a sheet, and passing the sheet in surface contact with a metal sheet through a second set of pressure rollers.
