Abstract

Sterilizing milk &c.-An apparatus for sterilizing milk is so arranged that the apparatus can be sterilized before introducing the milk, by means of heated air, and that the milk is passed through the apparatus and forced into bottles by air pressure. The air passes from a pressure reservoir a by a pipe a<2> through a heater b and coolers c, and thence to the milk-sterilizing apparatus. This consists of two vessels d, e connected by pipes as shown, and provided with stirrers, gauges, and blow-off pipes and taps d<5>, e<5>. Air at 300‹ F. is first passed through the whole apparatus. The coolers c are then put into action and the temperature of the air reduced to 160‹ F. Milk is then admitted to the vessel o and heated to about 160‹ F. for 15 minutes. The blow-off tap e<5> is then closed and the tap d<5> opened, whereupon the milk is forced by air pressure into the vessel d, where it is again heated. By leaving a small quantity of milk in the vessel e, sediment and gases are prevented from entering the vessel d. The milk is again heated in the vessel d, and then forced by air pressure through a cooler k and taps f<1> into bottles f. The taps f<1> are then closed and the bottles removed for use.
