Abstract

1,209,144. Refrigerating. DISTILLERS CO. (CARBON DIOXIDE) Ltd. 21 Feb., 1968 [25 Nov., 1966], No. 52795/66. Heading F4H. Apparatus for freezing liquid in a pipe-line comprises a source of liquefied refrigerant gas, an expansion and cooling zone in which the pipe-line can be located, a tube of relatively small cross-section for supplying liquefied gas to the zone and a tube of relatively large cross-section for removing refrigerant vapour from the zone. As shown in Fig. 2, a tube 22 has a screw 26 for connection to a liquefied gas cylinder and comprises a filter 27 and inlet chamber 28 for the liquefied gas, and a plug 29 into which one end of a tube 20 is soldered, the flow of liquid into tube 20 being limited by a pre-set valve 30. An externally adjustable valve may alternatively be employed. Tube 20 extends coaxially within a tube 21, which is connected at one end to tube 22 and at the other end to an expansion chamber 40 (Fig. 3), and terminates within chamber 40. The latter is shaped at 41 to receive a pipe 9, which is to be blocked by freezing, and has a cover 42. Gas from chamber 40 returns via tubes 21 and 22 to a tube 7 which leads to a device in which the gas is burnt in admixture with atmospheric air (Fig. 1, not shown). Tube 21 is made of nylon and tube 20 of stainless steel. A stand is provided for the liquefied gas container. In a modification (Fig. 5, not shown), the expansion chamber is of part-annular form and is defined by the pipe to be cooled and a synthetic rubber casing which is preformed to seal around the pipe or is clamped therearound. A tube is provided for conveying gases leaking from the expansion chamber to the burner.
