Abstract

1,209,024. Photo-electric smoke or oil mist detectors. ASSOCIATED BRITISH COMBUSTION Ltd. Jan.9, 1968 [Oct. 21, 1966], No.47247/66. Heading G1A. In a photo-electric oil mist or smoke detector the flow of oil mist or smoke bearing sample is periodically interrupted and the detector cleared of sample so that the detector can be zeroized. A tube 1 having a lamp 13 and photo-cell 14 at opposite ends receives an oil mist or smoke sample from an inlet 3 which is periodically blocked by solenoid operated plunger 5 which simultaneously opens a second inlet 4 to admit clean air to flush the tube. A cam 8 periodically energizes the solenoid and completes a circuit to a motor coupled to a potentiometer 10. If a recorder indicating the detector output is at this moment not at zero one or the other of contacts 12 is closed by a cam 11 to operate the motor and drive the recorder back to zero. Instead of a potentiometer 10, a shutter in the light path, and a reference light path of one is used, may be driven by motor 9 to zeroize the detector.
