Abstract

1293208 Detecting yolk in albumen photoelectrically DIAMOND INTERNATIONAL CORP 31 March 1970 [7 Oct 1969] 15172/70 Heading G1A Apparatus for removing yolk contaminated albumen from a stream of uncontaminated albumen flowing over a darkened area of a chute comprises a pair of photo-sensitive devices one responsive to yellow reflected light to cause operation of a flow diverting mechanism. The albumen flows down chute 1 and is illuminated at AB by light source 2. The reflected light passes through lens 4 to beam splitting mirror or prism 5 so that half the light passes through rectangular slit 8 and green filter 12 to fall on photo-multiplier 14 and the other half passes through slit 6 and blue filter 11 to fall on photo-multiplier 13. The photomultipliers are differentially connected to amplifier 18 whose output under balanced conditions is zero. To balance the light falling on the photo-multipliers adjustable diaphragms or polaroid discs 15, 16 may be used or alternatively the dynode voltage may be varied by potentiometer 17. To avoid direct reflection from the surface of the albumen polarizing discs 28, 29, having axes at right angles, are used. In operation, the presence of yolk causes extra light to be transmitted through green filter 12 so that an unbalance appears at the input to amplifier 18 to provide an output which energizes electromagnet 22 to operate air cylinder 23 and move chute 24 into alignment with reject channel 27. The outputs of the photo-multipliers can be displayed on meters 19, 20, 21. The presence of shell or chalaza in the stream affects the quantity of light reflected to both photo-multipliers and thus does not disturb the balanced condition. In a modification the contaminated albumen is sucked out of chute 1 by a gear pump which is driven in response to the unbalance signal.
