Abstract

1,208,421. Artificial legs. RUBERY, OWEN & CO. Ltd. 13 Oct., 1967 [20 Oct., 1966; 19 Jan., 1967], Nos. 46951/66 and 2855/67. Heading A5R. An artificial leg. for temporary use comprises an adjustable ankle joint 14, a hinge knee joint 12 and an adjustable above-knee assembly 11 between the knee joint and a stump socket 10, the assembly 11 comprising a plurality of members 32, 44, 48, 52, 57 slidable relative to each other in directions substantially at right angles to the axis of the leg and having co-operating planar and cylindrically curved complementary surfaces whereby relative sliding movement between selected members produces transverse and angular displacement in two directions at right angles to each other of the lower leg member relative to the socket. The skin portion comprises a tube 13 of rectangular section having a knee joint pin 31 which pivotally supports flanges 33 depending from the lower plate 32 of the above-knee assembly 11. In the above-knee assembly, the lower plate 32 and an intermediate member 48 have upper cylindrically concave surfaces 41, 49 on which complementary curved lower surfaces of the members 44, 52 are adjustably slidable, respectively, to provide relative angular adjustment of the skin' and thigh portions of the leg in two vertical planes at right angles. Also, portions of the lower surfaces of the top member 57 and the intermediate member 48 are slidable in flat-bottomed grooves 55, 46, respectively, to provide relative transverse adjustment between the skin and thigh portions of the leg in two directions at right angles. The members are secured in adjusted position by bolts 58, 59, the protruding portions of which are disposed in slots (69, 71 Figs. 4 to 6) in covering flanges (67, 68) 81, 82 provided by the intermediate, top and bottom members. A plate 17 to which the socket 10 or straps 16 depending therefrom are secured by screws is rotatably adjustable on the top plate by interengaging screws (74 Fig. 5) and slots (75). The knee joint is secured in straight position by a releasable catch 35. The ankle joint comprises a part spherical convex member 19 which bears against a spherical recess in a plate 21 mounted on the top of the foot 15. Set screws 26 arranged in a lateral flange 25 of the member 19 bear against the plate 21 and may be adjusted to vary the angular inclination of the foot relative to the skin. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,161,666.
