Abstract

1,208,408. Abrasive tools. HINMAR ASSOCIATES Inc. 21 Jan., 1969 [29 Nov., 1968], No. 3446/69. Heading B3D. An abrasive cutting tool comprises a body 11 adapted to be gripped and rotated and having a circular edge 14, a rim 13 of abrasive cutting material on the edge, the rim being of greater thickness than the body and axially offset relative thereto with an overhanging portion 20 on one side of the body at least twice the thickness of the overhanging portion 21 on the other side of the body. As described, the abrasive coating is on the inner rim 14 of the body 11 which may be of sheet metal and is formed with holes adjacent its outer periphery, whereby it is gripped and rotated. The abrasive coating, which may consist of diamond particles, overlaps the rim to form flanges 18, 19 having radially extending segments 20, 21 providing notches for the entry of coolant and escape of chips. The flange 18 is at least twice as thick as the flange 21 so that in the cutting of a wafer 17 from a bar 15 of semi-conductor material there is a greater clearance between the wafer 17 and the body 11 of the tool than between the body and the bar.
