Abstract

1,205,547. Abrasion tools. HINMAR ASSOCIATES Inc. 21 Jan., 1969 [29 Nov., 1968], No. 3441/69. Heading B3D. An abrasive cutting tool comprises a body 11 of flexible sheet material having a circular peripheral edge, an abrasive coating 15 bonded to the edge, flanges 17 of the coating extending radially along the sides of the body, and peripherally-separated segments 18 of abrasive coating spread around the rim at preselected intervals and extending radially from the flanges, the segments forming a discontinuous radial extension of the flanges and having portions 19 of the body mounted to the flanges for entry of coolant and escape of chips during an abrasive cutting operation. As described, the abrasive coating is provided on the inner rim of the body which may be of stainless steel or phosphor bronze and have a thickness between 0À002 and 0À008 inch, the body being gripped at its outer periphery during use so as to be tensioned. The abrasive which may be diamond dust, overlaps the rim of the body for a distance of 0À003 to 0À002 inch to form the flanges and the segments extend from the flanges several times the width of the flanges, the flanges and segments being 0À002 to 0À004 inch thick. The notches 19 between the segments have less width than the segments. The tool may be used for cutting off thin slices of semi-conductor material.
