In a carpet sweeper having a driven roller brush 3 and at least one additional roller brush 4, the driven brush 3 engages the additional brush or brushes 4, the brushes being independently or simultaneously adjustable relative to floor engaging wheels 23 of the sweeper. As shown, a pair of additional roller brushes 4 are mounted on opposite sides of the driven brush 3 in slotted side plates 33 of dirt containers 5 which are located within a metal or plastics casing 1 having apertures (8) closed by filters (7) (Fig. 1, not shown). The driven brush 3 which intermeshes with the brushes 4 is rotatably mounted on a yoke 10 which is slidingly adjustable between bearing plates 9 attached to opposite sides of the casing 1. An auxiliary yoke 11 which is pivoted to the bearing plates 9 bears on the yoke 10 and is urged downwardly against the bias of springs 27 by suitably rotating a manually operated knob 12 having a cam surface 17 engaging the yoke 11. The floor engaging wheels 23 are engaged in slots 21 in wing portions 20 of the bearing plates 9 so that by suitably rotating the knob 12, the driven brush 3 can be adjusted relative to the additional brushes 4 as well as the wheels 23. In alternative embodiments, the additional brushes 4 are simultaneously adjustable relative to the wheels 23 and brush 3 which is non-adjustably mounted (Fig. 3, not shown); and the additional brushes are independently adjustable (Fig. 4, not shown). In a further embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown) all the brushes are mounted on an adjustable yoke whereas the wheels are non-adjustably mounted.
