Abstract

1,207,399. Honing. DELAPENA HONING EQUIPMENT Ltd. 7 Oct., 1968 [10 Oct., 1967], No. 46280/67. Heading B3D. A honing head comprises: (i) a body; (ii) two sets of radially adjustable stone mountings carried by said body; (iii) an axially movable adjusting member within the body having plain conical surfaces coaxial with the member and facing in opposite directions; (iv) a cam surface or surfaces formed on each of one set of stone mountings and engageable with the conical surface or surfaces facing in one direction; and (v) a cam surface or surfaces formed on each of the other set of stone mountings and engageable with the conical surface or surfaces facing in the other direction, the cam surfaces on one set of stone mountings being spaced from the cam surfaces on the other set of stone mountings in the direction of the axis of the honing head in such manner that when the adjusting member is in a centralized axial position both sets of stone mountings are in their radially innermost positions. Stone holders carrying alternately roughing stones 16 and finishing stones 17 are radially slidable in grooves 14 formed in flanges 12, 13 on the honing head body 9. The root of each groove is connected to the bore 10 of the body 9 by a radial slot 15 of less width than the groove. Axially movable in the bore 10 is an adjusting member 18 having two cams 19, 20, each cam being shaped as two plain frusto-conical surfaces disposed base to base. One end of the member 18 has a spherical seat 21 receiving a spherical end 22 of an axially movable control rod 23. Slidable radially in each slot 15 is a cam plate 25 the outer edge of which contacts the base of the stone holder in the associated groove 14 and the inner edge of which is provided with cam following surfaces 26, 26 facing in the same direction and a portion 27 parallel to the axis of the body 9. Adjacent cam plates are so arranged that their surfaces 26, 26 face in opposite directions. Longitudinal movement of the stone holders in their grooves 14 is prevented by pegs 28 projecting from the side faces of the holder and engaging the inner surfaces of the flanges 12, 13. The stone holders are urged radially inwards by garter springs 30, 30. Guide strips 31 alternate with the grooves 14. In operation, when the member 18 is moved axially from a central position one or other set of stone holders is expanded, according to the direction of movement. In a modification, the body has in place of the flanges 12, 13 a single centrally disposed flange to each end of which an annular disc is secured. On the periphery of each disc there is formed a series of axial grooves, the two series being aligned. The inner face of each stone holder is provided with two shallow depressions, one adjacent each of its ends. Each cam plate 25 is replaced by two rods slidable in bores extending radially of the body axis. The outer end of each rod is housed in one of the depressions and the inner end has formed, at an angle complementary to the angle of the conical surface of the adjusting member 18, a surface equivalent to one of the surfaces 26. The surfaces on the inner ends of alternate pairs of rods contact oppositely facing conical surfaces of the member 18. Rotation of each rod is prevented by a locating screw in the body coacting with a groove formed axially of the rod. In another modification, one-piece stone mountings comprising integral stone holders and cam plates are provided. In a further modification, each stone holder is provided with lateral projections machined from the solid which are equivalent to a peg or pegs.
