Abstract
1403843 Honing J SUNNEN 22 May 1973 [31 July 1972] 24273/73 Heading B3D A honing mandrel for honing elongated cylindrical surfaces comprises an elongated mandrel body 22, Figs. 2 and 4, a number of work-engaging honing members 20 and a number of guide members 50 housed in the body, each honing member having an abrasive work-engaging portion 28 and a support portion 30 for co-operation with support means 68 in the body, each guide member having a workengaging portion and a support portion for co-operation with support means in the housing, and adjustment means 42, 66 housed in the body and operable to radially move the honing members and the guide members relative to the body. The body may be of steel or aluminium and at one end 24 is adapted to be connected to a power source for rotation and reciprocation. As described, the mandrel has a plurality of aligned honing members 20 on one side thereof, each member having a pair of abrasive elements 34 mounted on shelf portions 32 of supports 30 received in a groove 68 in the body. The supports have inclined cam portions 36, 38, Fig. 13, which engage in inclined grooves 44, 46, Fig. 11, in the adjusting member 42 disposed adjacent the supports 30 whereby axial movement of the member causes simultaneous radial adjustment of all the honing members. The adjusting member is retained on the body by one or more retaining members 74. The honing members have projecting portions 40 for abutting adjacent members and are accurately machined for length. Opposite the honing members, the body has two rows of guide members 50 in grooves 70, 72. Each guide member has a pair of work-engaging shoe portions 56 on shelf portions 54 of supports 52 received in the respective grooves 70, 72. Each support has cam portions which are inclined in the opposite direction to the cam portions 36, 38 and engage inclined grooves in adjustment members 66 retained adjacent the supports by members 78, 80, Fig. 4. Axial movement of the honing and guide members is limited at one end by stop members 86, 88, 90, Fig. 3, and at the opposite end by similar stop members (97, 98, 99, Fig. 5, not shown). The stop members 88, 90 at one end of the guide members 50 and the stop member (97) for the opposite end of the honing members 20 are fixed whereas the remaining stop members are adjustable to accommodate variations in the length of the honing members and guide members. The adjusting member 42 for the honing members has a slot 100, Fig. 11, at one end and is connected thereby to an operating member disposed in a bore in the drive end of the body for radially adjusting the honing members during the honing operation. The opposite ends of the adjusting members 66 for the guide members are connected to a nut member 120, Fig. 6, axially adjustable by rotation of a screw 124 by a driver engaging a slot 138. When honing the spaced main bearings 144, Fig. 10, one part of the bearing block is initially removed to provide a semi-circular bearing, the honing mandrel is placed in the bearing, a pin 148 is placed in a transverse bore 140 in the mandrel body, the lower side of the bore being on a diameter of the body, and the screw 124 is rotated to radially adjust the guide members 50 until there is no rocking possible about the axis of the pin or the axis of the mandrel.
