Abstract
1,207,319. Electron beam focussing apparatus. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP. 7 Dec., 1967 [13 Dec., 1966], No. 55749/67. Heading H1D. A temperature-compensated permanent magnet periodic focussing structure includes a plurality of annular magnets 22 of which the strength decreases with temperature, adjacent magnets having like poles facing one another and being spaced apart by polepieces each of which is formed of an inner part 24 of low reluctance material having an external diameter less than that of the magnets, and an outer ring 28 of a material whose permeability decreases with increase of temperature within the range for which temperature compensation is desired. In the travelling-wave tube focussing structure shown, the magnets 22 are of barium ferrite ceramic, parts 24 of soft iron, and rings 28 of an iron/nickel alloy containing 30% nickel, which becomes non-magnetic at an elevated temperature. The arrangement may additionally include a prior art temperaturecompensating magnetic shunt 26, of a material having a somewhat lower permeability than the rings 28.
