Abstract

1,206,975. Winch cable tension regulation. T. T. BOUGHTON & SONS Ltd. 4 Nov., 1968 [5 Aug., 1967], No. 36050/67. Heading B8B. In a winching system for trawling, a clutch between the win ch drum and its drive 1 is disengaged during winding in cable C, or a drum brake is disengaged during holding the cable, if the tension in the cable exceeds a predetermined value. The cable C extending from the winch drum passes through a tension responsive device B which comprises a pulley 16 spring loaded to form a bight in the cable C between two pulleys 14, 15, any movement of the pulley 16 due to increase in tension in the cable C causing displacement of an hydraulic piston 22 coupled to the pulley throngh a lever 18, 21. The said displacement causes operation of a piston and cylinder arrangement for either the clutch or brake disengagement, the re-engagement thereof once the cable tension is reduced, being delayed by a valve in the hydraulic line restricting the return flow of fluid from the clutch or brake cylinder to the device B. The hydraulically operated brake may be replaced by or supplemented by a manually operated drum brake comprising a pair of shoes 10, 11 pivoted at 14 and spring urged into engagement with a drum 9 fast with the cable drum, unless screwed into a disengaged position by a handle 12.
