Abstract

1,206,689. Containers with hinged doors. NATIONAL CARBONISING CO. Ltd. 28 Oct., 1968, No. 51112/68. Headings B8P and B8Q. A dual-load container 10 for transporting loads by road, rail and/or sea without unpacking, has a door 36 comprising upper and lower parts 38 and 40 connected together by hinges 50, in which both parts are swung open as in Fig. 3 so that stacked pallets can be loaded into, or unloaded from, the container by means of a fork-lift truck, or only the lower part 40 is swung open about the lower edge of the upper part 38 (as in Fig. 2) by tilting the container 10 so as to unload coal or coke which was loaded into the container through its removable tarpaulin top. In Fig. 3, a hinge pin 60 has been inserted in lugs 56 and a bar 56 (Fig. 2) and a hinge pin 74 has been removed from lugs 72 and a bar 70, the hinge 52 being permanent. The lower part 40 is locked shut for transit by rotation by means of a handle 86 of a shaft 80 provided with cam surfaces 82 which engage projections 84 on the door with an over-centre action. The handle 86 is held in locking position by a pin 88. The upper part 38 is locked shut by rotation by means of a handle 94 of a shaft 92 carrying a cam 96 which engages behind a lip 98 on a post 20. The lower part 40 is provided with a metal strip 100 (Fig. 3) which sealingly engages a resilient strip 101 (Fig. 2) on the container. The tarpaulin top is supported by cross-bars 102, and tied to. rods 104. The interior of the container is coated with an epoxy pitch, and washed after each load of coal or coke.
