Abstract

1,206,682. Elevated rail system. T. MERTENS. 12 June, 1969 [12 March, 1968], No. 12064/68. Heading B7L. A rail system comprises vehicles 36 running on tracks formed by a pair of vertically spaced U-section rails 30, 32 a pair of tracks being mounted at the opposite ends of support arms (26, 34), Figs. 1-3 (not shown), which are attached to a cross-braced beam structure (16, 18, 20) mounted on vertical pillars (22) the weight of the vehicles being divided between the two rails 30, 32. The vehicles are supported on upper wheels 38 and lower wheels 40, and idler wheels 42 below the upper rail 30 prevent derailment, some or all of the wheels 38, 40 being driven by electric motors. In order to divide the load between upper and lower wheels, Fig. 7, the upper and lower wheels 38, 40 are secured to upper and lower cranked members 46, 52 respectively which can slide vertically within a casing 48 and which have facing T-section grooves 50, 51 in which engage slide elements 58, connected to rods 60 journalled to a shaft 54 mounted to the casing 48. In a modification, Figs. 9, 10, 12 (not shown), the upper and lower cranked members have vertical racks which engage three pinions mounted on shafts rigid with the easing. In a further modification, Fig. 11 (not shown), to allow for rotation of the wheels about a vertical axis to negotiate curves in the track, the upper and lower cranked members are enclosed in a cylindrical housing to which the pinion shafts are fixed and which is rotatable within a casing and has a pair of radial collars engaging rings attached to the inside of the casing to take the weight of the vehicle.
