Abstract
1,206,436. Rotary-piston machines. J.F.G. ROY. Nov.21, 1967 [Nov.25, 1966], No.52926/67. Heading F1F. A rotary-piston I.C. engine has rotary-pistons R 1 , R 2 , R 3 co-axial with parallel intersecting cylindrical-cavities S 1 , S 2 , S 3 each of the outer pistons having an eccentric portion carrying a sealing element 5a or 5b and the central piston having sealing elements 8 to prevent direct communication between a port 11a for fuel-air mixture and an exhaust port 12a. The pistons are synchronously coupled to an output shaft 14 so as to revolve unidirectionally by gears 15, 16a, 16b. The piston R 1 compresses the mixture while the piston R 2 is driven by the combustion products. The central piston transfers the compressed mixture from the cavity S 1 to the cavity S 2 wherein it is ignited by a spark plug 13. Impeller blades 18 on the gear 15 effect a flow of cooling fluid across fins 17 internally of shafts 14a, 14b for the outer pistons. The machine may be adapted to operate as a pump compressor and when so adapted have only two of the pistons that are mutually adjacent.
