Abstract

1,206,295. Dyeing process and apparatus. COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANISATION. 3 Oct., 1967 [4 Oct., 1966], No. 44989/67. Headings D1B and D1L. Textile materials are dyed in the form of a sliver or other body of fibres with a predetermined amount of a dye liquor containing a dyestuff, at least 25% by weight of urea and a surface active agent which has rapid wetting and strong film forming characteristics but does not retard dye fixation by impregnating and feeding the impregnated material to a conveyor in a steaming chamber and steaming the material while on the conveyor and immediately therebefore, and allowing the material to remain on the conveyor for a period sufficient for the desired degree of fixation to occur. Preferably the dye liquor contains at least 30% by weight of urea and sodium dioctylsulpho-succinate or a secondary alkyl sulphate or secondary alkyl sulphonate having 16-18 carbon atoms is used as surface active agent. Wool, nylon, polyester and acrylic fibre materials are dyed with mordant, acid, reactive, disperse and basic dyes. Apparatus suitable for dyeing by the above process comprises in Fig. 1 two frames 1 and 2, coupled by sections 2A and an inclined sub-frame 3 which supports the conveyor. A pad mangle is mounted on frame 1 and comprises rubbercovered rollers 4 and 4A and side plates 5. Transfer rollers 6 and 7 carry the sliver in the flue 17A and into the conveyor belt 9 of steel rods driven by chain wheels 10 and 11. Conveyor 9 is enclosed in an insulated chamber 14 with lid 15 and window 16. Baffle 18 divides the flue 17 into its parts 17A and 17B which contains a roller 7 and has a lid 19. Steam pipe 23 mounted between the upper and lower portions of the conveyor runs across the chamber 14 and has two parallel rows of holes along its length. Flue 17, lid 15 and chamber 14 are insulated with glass fibre or synthetic foam.
