The detect extraneous matter in transparent containers, the containers are rotated about their vertical axes as they pass vertically through an inspection zone to be vertically scanned by a beam of light. In the embodiment the vertically scanning beam is centred upon the vertical axis of the container and moves with it through the inspection zone; the vertical scan inspecting both the walls and base of the container. In Fig. 1 an image of an illuminated slit 16 is swept by the rotating drum 4 of plane mirrors 5 across an angled mirror 17 contained in a column 18 which is concentric with a rotating table carrying the bottle 27 through the inspection zone. A vertical slot (not shown), Fig. 1 fixed to the table and in line with the axis of the bottle thereby causes a vertically scanning spot of light to move with the bottle as it moves through the inspection zone. During this passage the bottle is rotated by engaging vertically rotating rollers 28. An enclosure having matt white interior diffusing walls receives all light having passed through the bottle and directs it to a photo-multiplier whose output passes through an AND gate and a threshold device and operates a relay to reject the bottle of the intensity of the light is reduced by any extraneous matter. The relay effects rejection of the bottle. Two other inputs of the AND gate are present only during vertical scanning periods and when the bottle is in the zone.
