Abstract
1,182,413. Photo-electric container inspection. P.M. GILES. May 26, 1967 [Feb. 28, 1966], No.8697/66. Heading G1A. To detect foreign matter in containers, the inside surface of a container is scanned with a narrow beam of radiation such that the container fluoresces and any matter marks the fluorescent radiation or the matter fluoresces and the container does not fluoresce or both container and matter fluoresce but at different wavelengths. The scanning radiation may be infrared or ultraviolet radiation. In one arrangement Fig. 1, where the container 20 is stationary, radiation from a source 10 is directed down the centre of a probe carrying a mirror 18 to deflect radiation to the inside of the container. The probe comprises an outer cylinder 16 forming part of a worm drive 21, 22 and is keyed to an inner cylinder 15 driven by motor 25 so that the mirror 18 rotates and is lowered into the container which is thereby scanned in a helical path. The mirror 18 is adjustable to scan the base of the container. Fluorescent radiation returns up the probe to be deflected by a halfsilvered mirror 14 on to a dichroic mirror 26 which directs fluorescent radiation from the glass on to detector 28 and fluorescent radiation from any foreign matter on to detector 27. A signal from 27 or alternatively no signal from 28 operates a delay circuit 32 to reject the container. In another arrangement Fig.2 (not shown) the container is rotated and the inside surfaces scanned by a flying-spot scanner.
