Abstract

1,205,713. Cationic resin dispersions. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. 31 Jan., 1968 [27 Feb., 1967], No. 5052/68. Headings C3B, C3R and C3U. An aqueous cationic emulsion comprises (I) a water soluble cationic resin, (II) a hydrophobic isocyanate of the type used in paper making, e.g. octadecyl isocyanate and (III) a hydrophobic organic acyl compound of acidic character having m.p. <90‹ C. which is a latent inactivating agent for I. I may be an epoxy resin obtained by reaction of a polyamine with epichlorohydrin, a cationic melamine- or ureaformaldehyde resin or a cationic starch. III may be an aliphatic acid containing at least 12 carbon atoms e.g. stearic acid or its anhydride or acid chloride or a dimer of hexadecyl ketone. The emulsions are useful in paper sizing.
