Abstract

1,172,898. Sizing paper. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. 23 Feb., 1967, No. 8754/67. Headings DIP and D2B. Paper is sized with hexadecyl ketene dimer and 5-250% (based on dimer) of a fatty acid or the anhydride, acid chloride, amide or aldehyde thereof. A composition may be applied at the beater stage or to formed paper. In the former case, the dimer and acyl compound may alternatively be employed in separate emulsions. The fatty acid may be myristic, lauric, stearic, palmitic, or arachidic acid. The composition may be employed as a solution in benzene or chloroform or as an aqueous dispersion containing an anionic, cationic or non-ionic emulsifying agent. It may also contain silica, starch, wax, or rosin. An anionic emulsion may be used in conjunction with a cellulose-substantive cationic polymer.
