Abstract

1,260,702. Paper. KURARAY CO. Ltd. 18 April, 1969 [19 April, 1968], No. 20061/69. Heading D2B. Paper is made by a process which includes disintegrating staple fibres of water-insoluble polyvinyl alcohol and staple fibres of hotwater-soluble polyvinyl alcohol in water, forming a slurry, and wherein, prior to the papermaking step, the fibres have been treated with a silicone; a complex of a fatty acid containing 12-24C atoms and a metal chloride; a metal soap (as defined below); a ketene dimer (as defined below); a methylolamide of a fatty acid containing 12-24C atoms; or a cationic surface-active agent. The metal coaps are salts of di- or tri-valent metals e.g. Ca, Mg, Pb, Mn, Al, with a saturated or unsaturated fatty acid having 12-24C atoms; and the ketene dimers are those with alkyl groups containing 12-24C atoms. Rosin modified rosin, polyethylene oxide, potassium metaphosphate and poly (sodium acrylate) may be added to the slurry. The silicone may be an organopolysiloxane oil or a siloxane/oxyalkylene block copolymer, and may be applied as an emulsion or as a solution in a solvent. Metal complexes with fatty acids may be Werner complexes including chromium or, preferably, aluminium, chloride. The cationic surface-active agent may be a long-chain pyridinium halide, long-chain alkoxy-methyl-pyridinium chloride, alkyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, long-chain alkyl-dimethyl-benzyl ammonium chloride, or, preferably, long-chain alkyl amide methyl pyridinium chloride where the longchain alkyl group has 11-23C atoms. The addition of the water-repellants may be made at any stage prior to sheeting.
