Abstract

1,205,292. Pulp-washing and straining apparatus. SUNDS A.B. 11 April, 1968 [13 April, 1967], No. 17434/68. Heading BID. [Also in Division D2] Paper pulp is fed upwards through cylindrical tank 1 through an array of concentric annular hollow sieves 6-10, of which sieves 6, 7, 8 delivering pulp-washing liquid and sieves 9, 10 extract liquid from the pulp (Fig. 3, not shown), and a pulsating diaphragm or piston is connected to conduit 13, located in each filtrate outlet pipe 11, which pulsates the liquid passing through sieves 9, 10 to prevent their clogging. The pulsations may be continuous or discontinuous and may involve a quick reverse-flow stroke followed by a slow return. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the pulsating diaphragm is actuated by two contra-rotating eccentrically mounted weights. Conduits 13 extend along pipes 11 into the sieves. Sieves 6, 7, 8 may also have pulsating systems and may rotate in use. Surface skimmer 4 rotates, and washing liquid is delivered to sieve 8 through the upper central funnel shown from conduit 21.
