Abstract

1,204,685. Heat exchange elements; water boilers. VARIOTHERM S.A. 13 Dec., 1967 [14 Dec., 1966], No. 56624/67. Headings F4A and F4S. A heat exchanger tube intended for use as a flue tube in a water heater, comprises a pair of channel members placed face to face and welded together at the abutting flanges, each channel member consisting of a web 3 with the flanges 8 projecting at right angles thereto and a plurality of parallel fins 4 extending from the web between the flanges 8. The finned channel section is preferably formed by hot-drawing or extrusion, the flanges 8 being slightly thicker or alternatively of the same thickness, as the fins 4. Each flange of the section is preformed with a chamfered edge which on welding enables a butt joint to be formed in which the V-formation of the chamfered portions becomes filled with the weld material. Fig. 3 shows a sectional plan view of a gas or oil fired water heater incorporating four of the tubes through which the combustion gases flow, the arrangement being such that the thickness of the water path 11 around the tubes is uniform. Baffles may be inserted within the tubes to direct the combustion gases towards the tube wall. In one form each baffle comprises a transversely corrugated strip at the upper end of the tube. Or a pyramidal or tapered member may project into the tube from its upper end with the smaller end of the pyramid or taper approximately at the centre of the tube. In a further form described, each baffle comprises a helical member extending through the length of the tube.
