Abstract

1,204,472. Moulding slurries. FOSECO TRADING A.G. 24 July, 1967 [9 Aug., 1966], No. 35546/66. Heading B5A. [Also in Divisions C1, C3 and D2] Slabs or sleeves are formed of a composition comprising a binder, particulate coke, and 11-70% wt. Ca silicate fibre. There may be, e.g., 30-55 wt. per cent coke of, e.g. -100 mesh B.S.S., and 4-8% urea-formaldehyde/phenolformaldehyde resins in 1: 2 ratio. The binder may be urea or phenol formaldehyde resin, bentonite, china clay, starch, wheat flour, phosphate-modified starch, or colloidal silica. The Ca silicate fibres may previously have been treated with a chromate solution followed by a heat treatment. Also present may be milled or chopped organic fibre, e.g. rayon, cotton, jute, or aorylonitrile. The slabs or sleeves may be coated with a refractory dressing, e.g. a suspension of ZrSiO 4 flour. The slab may be made by having in tank 1 a slurry of the composition containing, e.g. 1% wt. solids; wholly immersing and maintaining static in the tank a removable perforate former 2 connected to a reservoir and water trap 6 and vacuum pump 5 which may apply suction of 1À5 p.s.i. From 6 liquid may pass to further reservoir tank 7 and hence to slurry formation tank 11 with stirrer 8, 9 and 10 are further pumps. When the desired thickness of solids is deposited on 2, 2 is raised clear of the slurry; the continuing operation of pump 5 causes withdrawal of liquid from the deposit, which is then stripped, e.g. by reversing the air flow from 5, or by pressure or vibration. The stripped shape is then dried, e.g. in an oven. The articles may have density 0À27-0À33 g./c.c., and are used as feeder head or riser sleeves for cast iron casting, or sleeves for casting copper.
