Abstract

1,204,109. Attaching metalwork to glassware. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 11 April, 1969 [13 April, 1968], No. 18652/69. Heading C1M. [Also in Division H1] A steel anti-implosion clamping band 7 which is initially smaller than the cathode-ray tube faceplate 1 it is to surround, is applied to the tube by first coating the tube with thermal insulation, then heating the band 7 so that it will slide into position, preferably with one edge against a mould match line 17, and then allowing the band to cool and shrink into place. The temperature to which the band is heated may be 450‹ C. and should be such that on shrinkage the band is tensioned to its yield point in spite of the tolerances in dimensions of the band and of the faceplate. When the band is entirely on the cone side of the mould match line a tensile force of 500-700 Kgm is required, and this may be obtained by reinforcing the band with a separate band 8, or by folding over the edge of the band either outwards or inwards (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) possibly with a reinforcing band arranged in the fold (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown). The material 6 may be polyvinyl acetate or epoxy resin, and the space at the rear of the band may be filled with adhesive 18 such as epoxy resin, urea or sulphur, which should not extend over the seal 3 between the cone 2 and the faceplate 1.
