[Also in Division B5] An implosion protection device for a cathoderay tube 1 comprises a rigid frame made up of a metal part 2a joined at flanges 3a, 3b to an insulating part 2b which may be of plastics material, the space between the frame and the tube being occupied by a filling compound 4. Alternatively, the part 2b may be of metal with a plastics coating on its outer surface, applied for example by the whirl-sinter process. In this case the frame may comprise a single pre-shaped metal part. In another modification the front part of the frame is covered with a layer of plastics foil secured thereto by a vacuum-application process, which may be facilitated by providing small holes in the surface of the frame to be covered. Additionally the foil may cover the viewing window of the tube, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), and may be stained and finished to provide a filter action and anti-reflection effect. Fig. 4 shows another modification in which the frame has two metal parts 44, 45, the former being covered by an insulating (plastics) cap 48 which bears on the front disc 42 of the tube (when provided) and which is secured to the flange 47 by a number of circumferentially-disposed resilient clips 50. The disc 42 may be of plastics foil whose outer surface is finely ribbed, stained and finished. The insulating cap may be used to cover a one-piece metal frame similar to the part 2a of Fig. 1 but without a flange, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown).
