A scale for use in determining the position of an object such as the work table of a machine tool comprises n graduation members a 6- i6 the centroids of which are spaced in accordance with a periodically repeated pattern and at integral numbers of a standard unit distance from each other, the pattern having a length of P units where P= n(n-1)/k + 1, k being an integer, and the pattern being such that for each integer x from 1 to n(n-1)/k,the centroids of k graduation members of any one pattern are spaced from the centroids of other graduation members of the same pattern or of one adjacent pattern by x units. Fig. 6 illustrates schematically the construction of a scale consisting of nine graduation members in the form of transparent windows and for which k=4. Thus the integers x equals 1 to 18 are each represented four times by the distance between the centroids of pairs of the windows. A scale constructed in accordance with a pattern complementary to that shown in Fig. 6, that is a scale having opaque portions where the pattern of Fig. 6 has windows, is illustrated in Fig.10 and consists of a number of repetitions of the pattern plus a number of blank portions. When a pair of such scales 100, 101 are moved relatively to each other and illuminated by a lamp 103 the light transmitted through the scales undergoes a steeper variation in intensity in the region of the position in which the windows in the two scales coincide than in any other relative positions. A photo-converter 106 provides an electrical signal in its output lead 107. (For Figures see next page)
