In a Coppie type coke oven, the temperature within the heating flues 5 is measured by an optical pyrometer directed through a peep hole 7 at projections 9, 9<SP>1</SP> formed on the walls of the heating flues. The projections 9 are staggered so that observations at each level can be made independently. The temperature difference between the projections 9 and corresponding points within the coke burden is determined by using thermocouples in the first coking period of a campaign, so that the observed temperatures of the projections 9 may give an indication of the temperatures within the burden during any coking period with a similar charge and heating parameters.
