Cooling discharged materials.-Hot residues from distillation processes, such as coke, are cooled by the repeated circulation through them of a body of air, the oxygen of which is taken up in the early stages of the process. The apparatus shown comprises a number of water-jacketed receivers B mounted in a setting M, and having around them baffled flues Z. The air is circulated by a fan G, and passes by the pipe L<1> through the material, then around the receivers through the flues Z, and finally back to the fan by way of the pipe L. The jackets of the receivers are connected by flow and return pipes to a boiler A. The direction of circulation of the air may be reversed at intervals, and the speed of the fan may be controlled in such a manner that the rate of transfer of heat to the water is equalized.
