Abstract

1,201,812. Coating apparatus. SOMMER & MACA GLASS MACHINERY CO. 14 Aug., 1967 [18 Oct., 1966], No. 37312/67. Heading B2L. Panels, e.g. glass panels, are coated by moving them horizontally through a vertically flowing curtain of coating material, the panels being first moved on a conveyor at a first predetermined speed, thereafter moved horizontally on the conveyor and through the curtain of coating material at a second predetermined and increased speed, and finally moved on the conveyor at the first predetermined speed. The panels are moved through the curtain at speed correlated with the thickness of the curtain to produce a deposit of coating material on the panels having a predetermined thickness. The speed through the curtain may be 15 to 37 times the first predetermined speed, e.g. 60 to 150 feet/minute and 4 to 7 feet/minute respectively. Apparatus for coating panels comprises a horizontal conveyor formed of a plurality of parallel, laterally disposed rollers for conveying the panels horizontally, divided into an upstream, an intermediate and a downstream group, first means having an actuating connection with the upstream and downstream groups for rotating the rollers at a first predetermined speed, second means having an actuating connection with the intermediate group for rotating the rollers of the intermediate group at a second predetermined and increased speed, a switch positioned on the conveyor actuated by panels moving on the conveyor and connected to the first and second means for rotating the rollers at the predetermined speeds, and means for forming a vertically falling curtain of coating material located above the intermediate group of rollers. The curtain of coating material may be formed by means of a hopper extending across the path of the panel, which hopper has in its bottom an elongate slot through which the coating material issues; by means of a weir over which the coating material flows; or by forcing the coating material through a slot. A second intermediate group of rollers, positioned between the upstream group and the first intermediate group, have clutches associated with the rollers of the second intermediate group which are effective to engage the rollers of the second intermediate group alternately with the first and second means for rotating the rollers at predetermined speeds. The aparatus may include means for collecting and recirculating coating material not applied to the panels.
