Abstract
1,201,466. Organohalosilanes. MIDLAND SILICONES Ltd. 27 Nov., 1967 [28 Nov., 1966], No. 53221/66. Heading C3S. Organohalosilanes are prepared by reacting silicon with an alkyl or aryl halide at elevated temperatures in the presence of a. copper catalyst prepared by the displacement of copper from a solution of a salt thereof. The copper may be obtained by adding to aqueous cupric chloride or sulphate a finely divided metal which is higher than copper in the electrochemical series, e.g. iron filings or zinc powder. Other metals may be present in the catalyst. The silicon is preferably in powder form having particle size of 10 to 500 microns, and may be in the form of ferrosilicon.
