Abstract
1,131,477. Alkyl halosilanes. MIDLAND SILICONES Ltd. 12 Oct., 1967 [12 Oct., 1966], No. 45654/66. Heading C3S. Alkyl halosilanes are prepared by contacting at temperatures greater than 175‹ C. an alkyl halide and a composition comprising silicon, a copper catalyst and a zinc halide, the composition being in the form of a suspension in an inert liquid. Suitable suspension media which are liquid at reaction temperatures are polychlorinated polyphenols, mineral oils, paraffins and waxes. The copper may be present as metal or a compound such as cuprous chloride and it may be alloyed or mixed with the silicon in any way. Preferred temperatures are 225‹ to 325‹ C. The zinc halide is preferably the chloride and, like the copper, is present in amount of 1 to 50% by weight of the silicon and copper.
