Abstract
So-called "silver precipitation nucleic" (used in the photographic silver salt diffusion process; see Division G2) are obtained by mixing a dispersion of a sulphide or selenide of any of the metals nickel, copper, iron, cobalt, zinc, cadmium, mercury, germanium, tin and lead formed in an aqueous dispersion of a water-permeable hydrophilic colloid, e.g. gelatin, and an aqueous dispersion of a silver salt which is more water-soluble than the sulphide or selenide, e.g. silver iodide, bromide, chloride, nitrate or p-toluenesulphonic acid silver salt. The molar ratio of silver salt to the metal sulphide or selenide may be from 1:20 to 5:1 and the nuclei may have an average particle size of 7-2500 <\>rAngstroms. In examples nickel sulphide is precipitated by adding an aqueous nickelous nitrate solution to an aqueous gelatin solution of sodium sulphide. To this nickel sulphide dispersion is added an aqueous dispersion of silver iodide made by mixing potassium iodide and silver nitrate. Alternatively, the silver iodide dispersion may be prepared by adding an aqueous silver-nitrate solution to a aqueous gelatin solution of potassium iodide.
