Abstract

1,201,321. Measuring tension. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. March 15, 1968 [March 17, 1967], No.12572/67. Heading G1W. Apparatus for measuring tension in an elongated flexible member 1 comprises two pivotally linked levers 2, 3 adapted to engage the member 1 and adjustable means 5 for applying known equal and opposite forces to the levers in such a way that known equal and opposite forces are applied to the member 1 in opposition to the tension. A pump, actuated by a handle 14 supplies pressurised fluid to a ram and the part-spherical ends 6, 7 of the piston 15 ans spacer 16 engage recesses 8, 9 in the ends of the levers 2, 3 which have recesses 10, 11 at their other ends engaging links 13, 12 of a chain 1. In use, the handle 14 is actuated manually and the forces applied to the levers 2, 3 by extending the ram and the proportional forces applied by the levers to the chain increase until an intermediate link 18 just becomes unstressed, indicated by the reading on a pressure gauge 17 becoming substantially constant. Alternative ways of pivotally linking levers 2, 3 are suggested. The apparatus may also be used to measure the tension in a rope or cable.
