Abstract
1315664 Hauling cables POST OFFICE Aug 28 1970 [3 Sept 1969] 43538/69 Heading B8B Apparatus for the laying or recovery of repeater cables 8 comprises pairs of traction rollers 2, 3 resiliently biased together to grip the cable for traction or braking thereof, and pairs of guide rollers 4, 5, 6, 7 resiliently biased together to grip the cable to either side of the traction roller pair. Each traction roller includes a pneumatic tyre for engaging the cable and is driven by a motor/pump unit 12, which during cable laying acts as a brake for the traction rollers. Each of a pair of the traction rollers is mounted at one end of a pivoted bell crank lever 14, the other ends of which levers are connected together through a sliding block bearing whereby symmetrical movement of both levers occurs under the action of an hydraulic ram pivoted therebetween to maintain a constant biasing pressure. The pairs of guide rollers are similarly mounted on bell crank levers which are biased together by torsion springs, opposed levers of each pair being coupled together through toothed quadrants to synchronize their movements. Normally open hydraulic disc brakes are associated with the traction rollers. In the embodiment of Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) adjacent pairs of guide rollers on each side of the cable are coupled by cable guiding skids. In the embodiment of Figs. 9-12 (not shown) the whole apparatus is suspended on leaf springs which permit limited longitudinal movement of the apparatus, load cells at both ends of the apparatus generating readings in response to fluctuations in tension in the cable being handled. In the embodiment of Figs. 14, 15 (not shown) traction rollers are mounted on both horizontal and vertical axes in alternating sequence longitudinally of the apparatus.
