Abstract

1,201,111. Measuring force electrically. K. SHIPPEN. Jan.9, 1969 [Jan.16, 1968], No.2256/68. Heading G1N. A magneto-strictive transducer for increasing force comprises a laminated core 10 Fig.1 with a primary and secondary winding 13 Fig.5 wound in a central pair of holes 12, and similar windings 16 wound in an off-centre pair of holes 14. The two primary windings are connected in series to an A .C. source at 18, and the secondary windings are connected in series opposition. When the core is unstressed the combined secondary output signal is zero: when the centre portion 11 of the core is stressed, the e.m.f. in the secondary winding 13 is reduced and a resultant output voltage is fed via amplifier 21 to a third winding on transformer 13 to restore balance in the network, the feedback current, measured at 23, being indicative of the magnitude of the applied force. In another embodiment Fig.6, the output voltage from the secondary windings when the core is stressed is amplified to energize a motor 29 varying the proportion of the energizing voltage fed to the one primary winding to restore balance.
