Abstract

1,200,732. Glass fibres. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 10 July, 1967 [11 July, 1966; 2 Feb., 1967], Nos. 31025/66 and 5070/67. Heading C1M. [Also in Divisions C3, D2 and F2] Fibres are of glass having specified alkali resistance. The glass may contain in wt. per cent CaO, 10-21; Al 2 O 3 , 12-21; MgO, 3-10; SiO 2 , 50-65; ZrO 2 may be partially substituted for SiO 2 . TiO 2 , Fe 2 O 3 , or Cr 2 O 3 may be partially substituted for Al 2 O 3 ; and BaO, MnO, or ZnO may be partially substituted for CaO; total ZrO 2 + TiO 2 + Cr 2 O 3 + Fe 2 O 3 + ZnO + BaO + MnO may be up to 10% wt ; up to 10% of a fluxing agent, e.g. CaF 2 , may be present. The fibres may have diameter (0À4 to 1.0) x 10<SP>-3</SP> inch and length up to 4 inches. Alkali-resistance is tested by exposing an abraded fibre to Ca(OH) 2 solution at 100‹ C., washing, and drying, the result is to be such that the fibre undergoes > 10 % reduction in diameter and has tensile strength 100,000 p.s.i.
