Abstract
Transparent, luminescent, glass spheres less than 50 mil diameter, preferably having a refractive index greater than 1.9, are made by incorporating 0.1-0.4 w/o. UO3 is the glass. The spheres may be embedded in a reflective binder to form highway markers, the retention of spheres in the marker after use being readily detected by exciting and measuring their fluorescence. Glass compositions given are (weight per cent): SiO2 71-73, Na2O 12-15, CaO 8-10, MgO 1.5-3.5, Al2O3 0.5-1.5, UO3 0.1-0.4; TiO2 27-46.2, BaO 33.2-62.2, B2O3 3.7-19.1, ZnO 0-16.5, Na2O 0-0.1, UO3 0.1-0.4; and a glass prepared from the following mix (parts by weight): TiO2 35.0, Ba(NO3)2 96.7, H3BO3 Na2UO4 0.5.ALSO:Transparent luminescent glass spheres less than 50 mil diameter, preferably having a refractive index greater than 1.9, are made by incorporating 0.1-0.4 w/o UO3 in the glass.
