Abstract

1,200,692. Pressure compensating system. COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE. Jan.30, 1968 [Feb.21, 1967], No.4834/68. Heading F1P. Variations in the volume of a dielectric liquid, such as oil, contained in a vessel 1 and surroundi an apparatus 2, such as an electrical cable, which apparatus is subject to thermal and hence volumetric changes, are compensated for by the provision of a buffer tank 3 which is connected to a cylinder 6 of pressurized inert gas. Upon the oil in the vessel 1 being displaced into the tank 3, the consequent pressure rise of the inert gas in the tank actuates a pressure contact 7 which in turn actuates a sealed motor compressor unit 4 as a result of which, the excess pressure in the tank is relieved with the gas so displaced being compressed and returned to the cylinder 6. Conversely, in the event of oil being returned to the vessel 1 from tank 3, the consequent decreased gas pressure within the tank 3 de-activates the pressure contact 7 and hence the compressor, and opens an expansion valve 5 so permitting gas to flow from the cylinder 6, via the valve 5, to the tank 3. In an alternative arrangement, the connection between the tank 3 and cylinder 6 is effected by means of a capillary tube and the compressor is rotated at a constant speed, the gas pressure within the tank determining whether the resultant flow is from or to the cylinder 6.
