Abstract

1,200,367. Metal/plastics laminate. CHASE BRASS & COPPER CO. Inc. 30 Aug., 1967 [13 Sept., 1966], No. 39740/67. Heading B5N. A method of producing a laminate of metal sheets or strips at least one of which is of copper, comprises the steps of preheating a copper sheet or strip to form a film of cuprous oxide thereon, preheating a second sheet or strip of the same or different metal, assembling the preheated metal sheets or strips and a film of a thermoplastic ionic copolymer resin interposed between them in contact with the oxide film, and, while maintaining the metal sheets or strips in heated condition, subjecting the assembly to pressure to cause the ionic resin film to bond the metal sheets or strips together. In the apparatus shown for performing the method a copper ply 10 heated by passage through a furnace 14, and a substrate ply 18, e.g. of tinplate, low carbon steel, stainless steel, or aluminium, heated by passage through a furnace 22, are brought together between pressure rolls 16, where a thermoplastic film, e.g. of an acrylic or methacrylic acid-ethylene copolymer containing ionic metal cross-linking agents such as alkali or alkaline earth metals, zinc and aluminium, is fed between them. One or more further plastics films 32, 34 may be applied to the outside(s) of the assembly between the rolls 16. The furnace 14 is gas-fired or contains quartz sodium lamps to oxidize the surface of the copper ply 10 to form cuprous oxide. The film 26 may be replaced by a pair of plastics films. In a further example the laminate includes three metal layers in turn of copper, tin-plate, and copper.
