Abstract

1,199,513. Cooling reactors. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 19 Jan., 1968 [27 Feb., 1967; 12 April, 1967], No. 3131/68. Heading G6C. In a water-cooled integral reactor the core and heat exchangers are mounted within an enclosure supported within a prestressed concrete pressure vessel. The space between the pressure vessel and the enclosure contains a gas at a pressure near that within the enclosure; the enclosure wall therefore experiences low-pressure stresses and the coolant pressure is applied directly to the concrete vessel. The enclosure 1, which encloses the core 2 and heat exchangers 4, is mounted within the prestressed concrete pressure vessel 8, and the space 14 is filled with nitrogen or helium gas. The duct 16 connects the interior 7 of 1 with space 14. To prevent loss of vapour and liquid from 1, vapour in duct 16 is condensed at 18 and returned to 1 through the duct 24. Thermal insulation 6 surrounds the enclosure 1 and the sealing skin 10 is cooled by coils 12. A frangible diaphragm 30 is secured in an orifice in enclosure 1. In a second embodiment, the vapour from the enclosure 1 is condensed on the sealing skin 10, collects at the base of the pressure vessel and is pumped back into 1.
