Abstract

1,198,695. Annealed polymeric films. CELANESE CORP. 9 Aug., 1967 [15 Aug., 1966], No. 36487/67. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C3] A film of a polymer which is polyethylene, polypropylene, or an oxymethylene polymer and having an elastic recovery from 50% strain of at least 70% at 25‹ C. is obtained by a process comprising extruding in the form of a film a molten polymer at a melt temperature no higher than 100‹ C. above the crystalline melting point of the polymer, cooling the extrudate within two inches of the extrusion orifice, and stretching the solidifying extrudate at a high rate of draw-down and at a drawdown ratio of at least 20 : 1 and annealing the resulting stretched film at a temperature of 5 to 100‹ C. below the crystallinic melting- point of the polymer for a period of at least 5 seconds. The extrudate is cooled by contact with a cooling roll or a cooling air stream. The process may be carried out to produce a planer film or a tubular film by a "blown film technique". Diagrams of suitable apparatus for both variations of the process are included.
